Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is a touch-based practice that helps facilitate nervous system regulation through calming the survival responses of fight, flight, and freeze. Individuals begin to track and follow sensations, which allows for the body to gently process stress physiology and integrate activating material. Exploring the subtle aspects of this somatic inheritance we build resilience and somatic presence. As a result, this presence helps us stay attuned to the present moment. Getting the felt-sense of this orienting helps us refine our understanding of what is somatic experiencing. Once a person becomes better connected to their body, their mind and body is able to work in harmony, allowing for a sense of coherence, or wholeness. By being able to create a resonance between the mind and the body, the never-ending chatter of the mind will pause, allowing a person to rest in the “here and now.” This process can bring relief to many people suffering from anxiety, depression, grief, chronic pain, digestive issues and feelings of stuckness.

I work primarily with Kathy Kain's Somatic Practice and Somatic Experiencing®, which is a body-oriented approach to trauma that was created by Peter Levine. It's based on the realization that human beings have an innate ability to overcome the effects of trauma, and return to a greater sense of aliveness, relaxation and wholeness. Trauma can range from surgeries, car accidents, falls, sudden loss of loved ones, hearing bad news, abuse, violations and etc.   

I’ve also begun to study with Stephen Terrell in his work, Transforming the Experienced Based Brain, to work with non-verbal development trauma using transforming touch and primitive reflex integration.
